As Paul Richards, global head of wine and spirits purchasing at 67 Pall Mall, puts it: “The accrual of value in wine is now not guaranteed – the annual storage fee is the only certainty.” Businesses like 67 Pall Mall have reflected on how to spur fresh engagement and respond to this uncertainty. Those that actively engage with two oft-neglected demographics in the sector – women and young people – showcase that a welcoming approach needs to be the path forward. Accessible cellar plans; women-led events; fine wine clubs for young people; all herald a fresh ethos. And it’s one that both responds well to fine wines’ changing landscape and encourages inclusion.

The annual Armit Wines portfolio tasting (pictured) aways brings a spot of vinous glamour to the busy London tasting calendar, following on from launch events for new vintages of the likes of 2023 Guidalberto and 2022 Sassicaia at various buzzing London restaurants for the lucky few. And, in addition to such highlights from its top Italian-leaning portfolio, this year the importer launched a new initiative in the form of what was modestly described as a ‘press lunch’, where various senior editors, writers and critics gathered to for a lively debate on how best to engage a younger generation with fine wines.

Accounting for some 90% of the US’s wine, considered alone the state comes up behind France, Spain and Italy as the fourth-largest producer in the world. What is more, California has carved out a high-end reputation, with investable ‘blue chip’ labels and other top quality wines to rival the best from Europe’s headlining regions, both in terms of status and the price tags to match. It is fair to say, though, that this has been achieved with more of a focus on America’s own wine-thirsty and deep-pocketed buyers.
